Last fall, I gave up my car for a bus pass. I try to read a book a week on the bus but mostly I just avoid eye contact with other passengers.

Mixed Blessings

Finished up Blessings during this morning's commute. While reading, I found myself super skeptical. Anna Quindlen throws this gang of misfit characters together. And they get along swimmingly. And why shouldn't they? For starters, none go by their actual names--it's moniker city around Blessings. Then there are the secrets, the misunderstandings, overcompensating for their pasts and on and on.

See, Blessings (owned by the Blessing Family) is this huge old school estate in the itty bitty town of Mount Mason. It's the kind of town where everyone knows everything about everyone. Not exactly my kind of place. And yet, on the sprawling grounds of Blessings, Quindlen creates a world within a world where secrets are safe. Sort of.

The novel opens up with a darn chilly scene--in the cowardice of night, two teens abandon their newborn. At Blessings. Only, they're not planners (obviously) so rather than leave the baby at the front door, they ditch the poor thing at the less impressive groundskeepers house.

Clearly, the bad news parents hoped richie-rich recluse Mrs. Blessing would assume care of the tot. However, it's Skip Cuddy (Groundskeeper Skippy, if you will) who finds, nurtures, cares for and eventually lives for the little one.

"This is Faith," he said. "She's not mine. Or she's kind of mine. Whatever. I'm her father. I found her by the garage in June and I've been taking care of her ever since."

Ah, father daughter relationships. Seems like I can't escape these things lately. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

Over the weekend, I had some wedding business to take care of. Fashionable Ro, the BF's mom my grandma and I drove up the 5. Then back down. Then back up. Aye yi yi. But, very fun times. Later in the evening, Ro and I set off by ourselves in search of bridesmaids dresses. Sadly, no dice. But we did stumble upon these L.A.M.B. lovelies at Neiman Marcus Last Call. I think we need them.

Check out the ultra hottie-hottie Shasta McSecretary pair on Ro. Wowzers.

And then, there are these cut out cuties I tried on. Note the random flip flops--we hoped to show off the heel height. I was kind of a giant in these babies.

We also grubbed on tableside s'mores for dinner. Yes, dinner.

What about you my sweets? How did your weekends go?

Oh, I need to read that! I love stories with tender father-daughter relationships. Mother-daughter and sister things don't usually work as well for me (probably because my dad was my hero, my mother was kinda just there and my sister hates me). Thanks for the review! Love the shoes. I'd fall over if I wore those. LOL

TABLESIDE SMORES?!?!!? (can you tell I'm excited by this?) If that's not genius, I don't know what is.

And ow ow, those booties and heels are hot! Too bad about the no go on the bridesmaid dresses, though. Next time!

Bookfool- Definitely give Blessings a shot. It's a quick, enjoyable read.
I have two brothers and growing up, I always wanted a sister. But now, I'm kinda glad I got to rule the roost as the only young gal in the house. :)

Amy Kelinda- They're unbelievably tasty. I'm wowed every time we have them. Which, of course is as often as we can.
