Last fall, I gave up my car for a bus pass. I try to read a book a week on the bus but mostly I just avoid eye contact with other passengers.

Los Feliz Saturdays vol. 13

The BF and I have been meaning to visit The Oinkster in Eagle Rock forEVER. We've heard nothing but delightful things about the restaurant.

So we were beyond surprised when we were greeted with a nearly empty parking lot and a practically vacant dining room. I contemplated ordering a shake (they offer ube shakes for all you halo-halo heads) but decided to stick with iced tea. Good thing too, considering the monstrous platters they delivered to our table.

I went with the pulled pork sandwich and fries. Most pulled pork sandwiches I've had are slathered in bbq sauce. Not the case with The Oinkster's. But I think this helps keep the purple coleslaw and delicious roll on the crispy-crunchy tip. They do offer a rather thin sauce on the side that I was mildly skeptical of. Until I poured some of the sweet stuff on. Holy moly. Fantastic.

Of course, the BF kept it real by ordering an avocado bacon cheeseburger. While he was briefly distracted by the college football game on the big screen, I took advantage by stealing some avocado and bacon. Delish. Then I acted super nonchalant and asked after his burger. He explained that it had a really homemade feel. Like the patty was hand formed instead of that frozen cookie cutter nonsense at lots of burger joints. Oh, and the taste was good.

Though I was pretty concerned with chowing down, I did notice customers coming through the doors. In droves. By the time we left, just about every booth was filled up. Guess we're just early birds?

Since we were sort of in the hood, we headed down to Galco's in Highland Park, another spot that's been on our must-see list. Galco's is this awesome shop that carries specialty sodas, liquor and candies. But mostly sodas. Aisles and aisles of sodas.

We first became intrigued with Galco's when our boy Huell Howser did not one, but two specials on the place. How could we resist? I was surprised to see practically all varieties of Faygo--I had no idea it was available outside the Midwest! We also got a kick out of some of the cheekier brand names: Rat Bas*#$d Root Beer: Tastes like a Son-of-B%^#h or Obama: Yes We Can Cola and, of course Pure McCain Cola. We left the store with a cart full of loot. Since I'm all weddings, all the time, I'm thinking of serving all sorts of fun gourmet sodas instead of the big name varieties at the reception next year. Thoughts?

Serving gourmet sodas at your wedding reception sounds like such a fun idea! It'd give guests a nice little experience outside of the confines of Coca-Cola and Pepsi and the like (I'm a Dr. Pepper kind of gal myself).

That pulled pork sandwich sounds delicious. I know what you mean about being skeptical about empty restaurants, though, but it's a good thing you stuck around to give it a try! Seems you really were just the early birds to a really happenin' eatery!

Amy- When I was a kid, all I EVER drank was Dr. Pepper! Yeah, the BF and I tend to be kind of early bird nerds; we usually have dinner super early so when we head out to restaurants, we're often the youngest ones there! ;)

You went to The Oinkster and didn't tell me?! It's a great place. That's where I was when I called you to wish you happy b-day.
