Last fall, I gave up my car for a bus pass. I try to read a book a week on the bus but mostly I just avoid eye contact with other passengers.

Cry Me a River

Today, those snoopy peeps over at Booking Through Thursday want to know:

What’s the saddest book you’ve read recently?

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Absolute tear fest. However, it was also superbly touching. I believe I called my dad soon after finishing it up. Not sure if I'll be able to make it through the film adaptation out later this year. I'm a bit of a crier. Just a bit.

Any recent reads that caused you to bust out the kleenex?

The Road is beautifully poignant book.

My friend told me that after he read The Road, he wanted to kill himself. Not really kill himself, but that he was so depressed afterwards. He refuses to see the movie for that reason. I haven't read any terribly sad books recently, but I did re-read two sad plays in my collection: Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" and Eugene O'Neill's "Long Days Journey Into Night." It wasn't tear-fest sad, but kind of "Gee, that's a downer" sad.

One hundred percent agreement. Every line of The Road is pure verse. But it will knock your teeth out. I honestly didn't know if I'd recover from that read. I would watch Reservoir Dogs five times in a row before I'd risk a film version of The Road.

I have not read the book but the movie trailer looked really good. Now I want to read it too if I can take it.

I gave you an award over on my page

If the movie is anything close to the book, I will need the kleenex stuffed purse.

Gautami Tripathy- Totally agree. It's amazing that something can be so beautiful and horribly painful at the same time.

Amy Kelinda- A few friend who've read The Road have shared that exact sentiment! What prompted the revisit of the "downer" plays?

Carolyn- Right? I felt like I needed to decompress before re-entering back in society!

Izzy J- As much as the film frightens me, I'm really interested to see how some of the scenes play out on the big screen. I *might have to sit through the film. Thanks so much for the award! :)

Christine- If I do end up seeing the movie, I think I'll need to bring a couple boxes of kleenex.

I'm terrified of The Road and dying to read it. What a conflict. For the most part, I go out of my way to avoid really sad books. Actually, I've put The Road on my wish list and taken it off, several times. I can't make up my mind whether or not I could handle it.
